A work of art
NRCA's third annual Children's Art Contest received 53 creative submissions from young relatives of NRCA members and their employees. Sponsored by A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply, Aurora, Ill., the contest was conducted as part of NRCA's National Roofing Week held June 5-11. More than 3,000 votes were cast online to determine the three contest winners.

Showdown in Denver
When the EPDM Roofing Association learned of a proposed "cool roof" amendment to Denver's building codes in 2015, the association called upon local construction professionals to oppose the amendment. The resulting coalition, significantly supported by members of the Colorado Roofing Association, successfully persuaded the Denver City Council to reject the amendment that would have required all new low-slope roof systems on commercial buildings to be highly reflective surfaces.

With 80 locations throughout the city, Chicago's Public Library system provides numerous free, open places for Chicagoans to gather, learn and read. In 2015, Korellis Roofing, Hammond, Ind., overcame logistical and fall-protection challenges while installing PVC and vegetative roof systems on the Chicago Public Library system's most recent branch in Chinatown.

Dealing with DOL's new rules
The Department of Labor's (DOL's) new regulations governing the payment of overtime to salaried employees may affect your company. Employees whose salaries are less than $47,476 per year will be entitled to overtime compensation as of Dec. 1. DOL calculates 22.5 million workers potentially are affected by the new regulations, including 130,000 construction industry workers.

Lessons from the field
In 2015, NRCA's Workforce Solutions Committee commissioned a survey of current roofing employees to identify what compels them to join a roofing company and what keeps them there. The results of the survey, which was offered in English and Spanish, offer insight about how roofing companies can better recruit and retain more employees capable of developing successful careers in the roofing industry.
