I am vice president of Collins Roofing Inc., Salt Lake City.

What is the most unusual roofing project of which you have been a part?
My company recently finished work on a new Audi Executive Club located in Rio Tinto Stadium, Sandy, Utah, home of the Major League Soccer team Real Salt Lake. The project had some complicated access areas that required my crew to work mostly on their knees and stomachs.

What was your first roofing experience?
When I was about 10 years old, I spent a day riding around with my uncle during summer break. Back then, my uncle only did built-up roofing with gravel, and I distinctly remember the smell of melting asphalt. He also took me to Burger King, which was pretty awesome.

Why did you become involved in the roofing industry?
Three of my uncles own roofing companies, but I honestly never thought I would become involved in roofing. However, after coming to Utah from Ohio after college, I connected with my Uncle Doug and decided to take a ride with him to see what the roofing world is all about. I was impressed by his relationships and honorable business practices and decided to join his company. I took a crash course in roofing and estimating by working with crews, architects and sales representatives. Ten years later, I manage all daily operations of production and look forward to carrying on the company's legacy.

What's your favorite roofing material to work with? Why?
Johns Manville PVC with DuPont™ Elvaloy KEE Polymer—It's a solid product that installs extremely well and has the best track record in the industry for a single-ply. I am a huge advocate of finding products that represent the same quality and commitment to the customer that I believe in.

More From This Issue

  • Rooftop photosynthesis

Building owners who desire the addition of sustainable attributes for their buildings often select vegetative roof systems. The most recent edition of The NRCA Vegetative Roof Systems Manual—Third Edition contains important updates for roofing professionals who install vegetative roof systems, including revised waterproofing membrane recommendations, expansion of structural roof deck information, and updated standards and codes references.

  • Somewhere in middle America

The new Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha aims to transform the way cancer is diagnosed and treated. Tasked with installing types of six roof systems on 14 roof areas atop the center, Scott Enterprises Inc., Omaha, overcame inclement weather and challenging material staging conditions to help complete the revolutionary cancer treatment facility.

  • Chemical considerations

The environment in which a roof system will be exposed is an important consideration in roof system design. Built-up roofing, or a polymer-modified bitumen or single-ply roof membrane can prematurely age when there is not chemical compatibility with its surroundings. Rooftop exhaust, prior roof systems and the rooftop activities of other trades all can affect whether a roof system functions properly.
