McElroy Metal Inc., Bossier City, La., recently completed a retrofit installation and 500-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) project on its manufacturing facility in Peachtree City, Ga.

The 34-year-old, 30,000-square-foot galvanized R-panel metal roof system was retrofitted with McElroy Metal's 238T symmetrical standing-seam metal system installed by Paramount Metal Systems, Little Rock, Ark., followed by the installation of 1,960 PV panels on the plant's roof and parking lot canopy.

The project is part of Georgia Power's Medium Scale Georgia Power Advanced Solar Initiative. The energy created by the half-megawatt PV system will be sold back to Georgia Power.

  • Making progress

The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing's RoofPoint™ program, a voluntary, consensus-based sustainable roof rating system to help building owners and designers select nonresidential roof systems based on long-term energy and environmental benefits, continues to gain momentum and has numerous initiatives planned for 2015 and beyond.

  • A standard of excellence

After Philadelphia-based Overbrook School for the Blind's roof system began experiencing leaks in 2012, Russell Roofing Co. Inc., Oreland, Pa., restored the school’s roof and received a Gold Circle Awards honorable mention for its work.

  • What do you declare?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD®) is a disclosure document providing environmental data based on products’ life cycles. Although it’s currently unusual for roofing projects to specify roofing products with EPDS, it’s a good idea to become familiar with how EPDs are developed and how they may be required for future roofing projects.
