Built in the 1860s by Otto Junkerman to resemble a church in Germany, the Pine Chapel in EB Lyons Nature Preserve in Dubuque, Iowa, hosts thousands of visitors annually. When its cedar shake roof became severely deteriorated in 2016, Paul Meissner Roofing, Siding & Insulation Co., Dubuque, helped renovate the building's roof system.
Workers removed the old cedar shakes and installed new plywood, WinterGuard® underlayment, Roofers' Select® felt, Cedar Breather® underlayment and new 16-inch Cedar Shingle & Shake Bureau®-certified cedar shingles, a National Register of Historic Places requirement. Workers also custom-fabricated the copper gutter apron, drip edge, step and wall flashing, ridge vent and cedar ridge cap shingles and installed new siding on the steeple.
Funds for the project were provided by generous donors through the Friends of the Mines of Spain nonprofit organization.
